Sun Up, Top Down

VW Ad

When it seems that our grey, dreary weather will never end, it is good to know that someone, somewhere, is driving with their top down, wind in their hair and sun on their skin.

This witty ad from VW offers a Vitamin D and eases the jealously I feel towards sun-soaked Bug drivers… slightly.

Many of us began the New Year in high spitits, with great anticipation of what 2015 will bring. I am sad to say, Steven may not be as hopeful.

Not too long until 2016…

It’s goodbye for now…

Uncategorized

After nearly three years, hundreds of blogposts, thousands of posters, scores of bad puns, and heaps of fun writing about the best medium in the business, this blog is taking a break for 2015.

Thank you to everyone that wrote in with a story, tittered at a double entendre, pondered the identity of the person behind the corny nom de plume (a clue below) or simply read the blog in between doing real work. It’s been a huge amount of fun!

Hopefully this blog will be up and running again sometime…but for now, a very happy new year and many thanks for reading.

All the best,

Poster Boy

Can you guess who it is yet?

PS That really is the back of my head (you’re welcome)

Panic on the streets of London

Uncategorized

*

If, like me, you are struggling for inspiration (and cash) this Christmas, then the smartest thing you could do is jump in a taxi.

Cruising London’s Christmassy streets right now are these very tidy taxis from notonthehighstreet.com, encouraging us all to ‘have a Christmas less ordinary’ by visiting their online store or by downloading their gift finder app. Once on board, shattered shoppers benefit from free CabConnect passenger Wi-Fi, helping them to visit notonthehighstreet.com during their journey…and once they leave the taxi they’ll receive 10% off purchases with the promotional code on the receipt.

Very smart stuff.

Ed Mili-brand

Uncategorized

Ed Miliband has had a pretty tough year, getting to grips with being leader of the opposition – surely one of the world’s most thankless jobs – but received a bit of a boost to his brand last week, courtesy of everyone’s favourite advertising medium (you know which one I’m talking about, right?)

Ed Miliband had been speaking in central London about Labour’s plans for the economy – and during the Q&A, Clear Channel’s UK CEO asked him what he would say to the nation if he could have his message on a Piccadilly Circus billboard. And a few hours later, this appeared….

Not bad for Miliband’s Mili-brand, right?

A handle on this

I spotted this corker on the Brilliant Ads twitter feed (check it out, if you don’t already). The more you look at it, the cleverer it gets…

Off the Railings

Uncategorized

Do you know what I hate? Boring, January to November railings, which don’t give you anything to live for.

Do you know what I love? Christmas railings!

Top job, Cestrian, who have brightened up their corner of Cheshire with these 75m railing wraps outside of their HQ.Check out more of their work at http://www.cestrian.co.uk/.

Foot of Cupid Stamps on Phone Boxes

Uncategorized

Would you take a selfie with a plastic foot on a phone box? Yes, so would I – which is why I am a marketer’s dream (and probably also why I do this job).

There must others like me who are out there too (presumably) which is why those clever folks at MJ Media, Posterscope and JC Decaux have teamed up to stamp Monty Python’s iconic foot of cupid all over the UK.

It’s all in aid of promoting the One Down, Five To Go DVD. (It’s nearly Christmas, apparently).

WoW

Uncategorized

I can’t pretend to have ever understood the appeal World of Warcraft holds. Indeed,  as an introverted, geeky teenager who spent his teenage years locked in a bedroom poring my a guitar and the sheet music for 80s anti-capitalist punk bands (and not really talking to any girls, ever) I always viewed those contemporaries who locked themselves away in their rooms and pored over World of Warcraft with a 16 year old’s haughty disdain.

How wrong I was. While the SoCal punk heroes of my youth are now either dead, or even worse still writing songs about skateboarding, World of Warcraft is a multi gazillion dollar industry and franchise which is actually pretty cool.

And so is some of their advertising. Earlier in November, this photo of a taxi getting totalled by a gigantic axe was doing the rounds on Twitter. I don’t understand the significance of the axe, of necessarily what a Warlord of Draenor is, but I do know a good outdoor PR stunt when I see one…

Have a good week,

PB

HOLIDAYS ARE COMING

Uncategorized

Null
Despite what nannying Guardian columnists, vicars and your Nan might think, everybody knows that the best things about Christmas are consumerism, food and breakfast drinking. So I am *delighted* to see that the first festive harbinger of christmas hams, hats and happiness has arrived – in the form of the famous Coca-Cola Christmas lorry.

But the great news doesn’t stop there – because the most famous HGV in advertising history is going on an IRL tour, according to i. Between 28 November and 23 December however it will visit sites of religious and cultural significance such as Asda Milton Keynes and Back Lane Car Park, Newton. Festive!

To find out when it’s coming to a town near you visit the Coke website, type in your postcode and prepare to suspend your cynicism for a few hours…
