This Is Great

Uncategorized

The Olympics brought many things to London – including world-class athletes, a renewed sense of national pride, bus loads of lost tourists and some really good outdoor ads.

So how does the government – who’ve sprayed over £9bn of taxpayers’ money on a truly amazing party – cash in on the fact that we’re all feeling pretty pleased about our own ability to hold a kick-arse global sports day?

Well, with some tactical outdoor ads (obviously).

Mother and Radley Yeldar have created a pair of Olympic ads, which will run for two weeks across 500 outdoor spaces at UK train stations – donated by Network Rail. The pair are part of the long running (and excellent) GREAT campaign, designed to encourage everyone to holiday in Britain.

The first of the two executions shows the Olympic rings from the Opening Ceremony, with text reading: “This is GREAT Britain. Thank you to everyone who took part in London 2012.”

The second execution features British gold medallist Mo Farah imitating world record holder Usain Bolt’s signature arm gesture, next to Bolt imitating Farah’s ‘Mobot’ celebration…. and is the coolest thing I’ve seen since Bill Wilson moonwalked round the office at the last OMC Christmas party.

You know what? This is pretty bloody great

It’s easy to be cynical about stuff like this, but it’s a nice execution, on donated space, and features two of the coolest sportsmen on the planet…. so I’m not going to even try.

But are ads like this enough to change behaviour? Well, in my case the answer is no; I’m off on holiday to France, to drink pinot noir, eat smelly cheese and argue with my loved ones – but normal blogging service will be resumed at the end of August.

Au revoir for now,

PB

Advertisements

Bolt

There’s been plenty of discussion on these pages – and others – about the nature of official Olympic advertising… and some of the unofficial stuff too.

Companies like Adidas, Samsung and McDonald’s have paid a fortune to be associated with the London Games – and have invested serious cash in outdoor all over London.

But where does that leave unaffiliated businesses keen to associate themselves with London 2012…but at pains, obviously, to comply with Locog’s strict advertising rules? In the case of Strongbow (and Ocean Outdoor) it’s gold medals all round for a simple, unbranded and timely ad, blending the cider brand’s archery insignia with Usain Bolt’s sprinter’s trademark pose:

Strongbow: It’s isotonic, probably

The many joys of digital, eh? I’ll raise a pint to that.

To Stratford! And Beyond!

Uncategorized

After seven years of waiting patiently*, yours truly finally had a chance to snoop around the Olympic site for an hour or two this weekend – bravely shunning both the company of my family AND the world’s largest McDonald’s to look at ads.

The journey started at Kings Cross, which is festooned with eye-catching brands not least the ones below (which I wrote about way back here).

I think they call that ‘brand equity’

At Stratford International, Deloitte – an Olympics sponsor – have wrapped the entire station in ads designed just for that location:

And a stone’s throw away from Stratford International (at the rather humbler ‘Stratford’) Lloyds TSB dominates the space in a similar way.

Lloyds TSB @ Stratford

In fact that oversized,  dominating outdoor seems to be the modus operandi for the core Olympic sponsors (as anyone who’s walked through the gazillion McDonald’s ads in Euston will testify).

Indeed just to the side of Olympic park – and visible from the walkway that connects Stratford International and the main stadiums – Cisco systems are doing just the same.

Cisco @ Westfield Stratford

But my favourite ad of them all is from the ever cheeky Paddy Power, who’ve jumped shamelessly on the Olympic bandwagon (but with a fair amount of wit and brio):

Well, it made me smile..

Have a Golden week,

PB

* I’ve been doing other things in the intervening time.
