Xbox

Uncategorized

Microsoft’s Xbox is easily the coolest thing about the ailing US giant – and has an enviable reputation for superb advertising and PR.

So I wasn’t surprised to see a nice stunt from them in a warehouse near Liverpool Street the other week. It was part of the Xbox One tour promotion, which gives eager gamers the chance to play with Microsoft’s newest iteration of the smash hit console.

Check out the lighting – in Xbox green – which made the whole building look like an ad for the console. And up in the corner? A very pertinent billboard ad….

Shredded Neat

Uncategorized

Spending my time, as I do, on the mucky streets of the east London urban jungle, it is sometimes difficult to remember the sunlit uplands of my youth.

Those sepia coloured days were largely spent frolicking in meadows (and by “frolicking” I mean “drinking cider with my friends and firing air rifles”), so I needed no excuse to raid the OMC archives for this brilliant piece of field-based media.

Produced by those clever sorts at Curb Media this epic ad for Shredded Wheat has it all: epic scale, a brilliantly simple creative idea, superb execution and all mown into the product’s sole ingredient.

Genius.

Ol’ Booze Eyes

Uncategorized

After last week’s ad for Irish True caught my eye, I received an email from a loyal reader who had spotted another whiskey advert that used black and white photography, deceased cultural icons and a bit of faded glamour to sell booze.

Jack Daniels produce some of the most consistent and instantly recognisable outdoor ads that are, well, out there, but for this variation on the classic whiskey they’ve produced a variation on their classic ads. The typeface looks different, the copy feels less “folksy” and they are using a celebrity endorsement (albeit, a dead one).

It’s a brave new world, even if the photo they’ve picked of Frank Sinatra seems to have been taken after a particularly satisfying piece of parallel parking…

Ireland Outdoor

Uncategorized

I went to Ireland for the first time this weekend, and had an absolute blast. In between eating lamb stew, necking pints of Guinness, enjoying the craic and avoiding lazy clichés, I even spotted a great example of some place-based/knowingly patriotic outdoor advertising in the airport.

Artpop? Only outdoor

Uncategorized

Q. If you are the most famous musician on the planet, launching the most anticipated album of your career, and want to create a cacophony of fan suspense, social media chatter and acres of newsprint, what’s the best way to reveal your new album’s artwork?

A. Simple – just display the Jeff Koons-sculpted album cover via Clear Channel billboards across the world, streaming the whole thing on your official website! Today, minute by minute, new pieces from the new Lady GaGa album cover were shown everywhere from Barcelona to Belgium in a massive, coordinated outdoor campaign.

After all, if you’re a global celebrity you’d want an advertising medium with a bit of star-dust, right?

Have a great week,
