Dara!

Uncategorized

I spotted these ads for Dara O’Briain’s new show on Dave this week. The first, on the tube, poses the sort of question I was never able to do in GCSE maths, even with a kindly teacher helping me through the hard bits…so not much hope here then.

However, on a separate billboard, Dara poses another question which I think we all know the answer to:

It is, of course, “very high indeed.”

Have a good week,

Bobby And The Boys

Uncategorized

Bobby Moore (the greatest defender in English football history, just ahead of Suffolk legend and personal favourite Terry Butcher) is the star of a new outdoor ad, designed to raise awareness of bowel cancer.

Sir Bobby lost his battle with bowel cancer twenty years ago, which the Bobby Moore Fund is marking with a campaign called “Make Bobby Proud”.

At its heart is a piece of outdoor media, using the latest gender recognition software to target a male audience. At Ocean Outdoor’s digital screen at Westfield London, ‘Look Out’ camera technology monitors the gender of people passing in front of the digital advertising billboard and when the majority of the audience is male, the Make Bobby Proud advert is displayed.

It’s a great use of technology – and a smart way of raising awareness of a disease which predominantly affects men.

Surfing By The Seat Of Your Pants

Uncategorized

The outdoor ads around the launch of the new Microsoft Office software (you remember, it’s the perennially not-that-great suite of programmes to help people with real jobs add VAT to things, or make signs) have been much more exciting than the product themselves.
As well as some nice livery work on the trains out of Liverpool Street, and some traditional sheets like those below (no doubt aimed at the busy commuter who wants to spend several hundred pounds on a new way to enjoy Excel spreadsheets) Microsoft have teamed up with UM and Rapport to do some risqué stuff in the park.* Liv St?

Now, before you get too carried away we’re still talking about outdoor advertising here – and specifically a range of bespoke, Wi-fi enabled branded benches at a select range of locations in London and Birmingham.

It’s the first time that parks like Tavistock and Red Lion square in London (as well as Victoria Square in Birmingham) have let a commercial partner use their space. With public demand for free public Wi-Fi growing, it’ll will be interesting to see of more advertisers start looking to our city centre parks as places to land their message.

Uniting Outdoor

Uncategorized

There’s a war going on in British politics at the moment – with trade unions, the Labour party and the lefty-denziens of Twitter engaged in political hand-to-hand combat with Iain Duncan Smith, George Osborne and the rest of the coalition government.
At the heart of these fierce debates is the shape, size and nature of the welfare state – so I was interested to see Unite, the UK’s biggest trade union, have launched an advertising campaign aiming to defend the principles behind social security.

It’s called “Our Welfare Works” and like any smart advertiser, they’ve decided to chuck some outdoor into their media mix – via some moving billboards deployed in central London.

It’ll be interesting to see if the campaign makes much headway in a debate notorious for the intractable differences of all interested parties…

AmExcellent Idea

I’m enthusiastic user of cabs (and an enthusiast for taxi advertising, as regular readers will know) so I was interested to see that Verifone have teamed up with American Express (via Kinetic, and those clever sorts at Ogilvy One) for a campaign combining traditional taxi supersides with digital domination of 200 branded taxis and in-cab screens (with a further 150 taxis featuring American Express branding).

But the best bit is the ads you’re served as your cab swings through Soho (steady) waits in Whitechapel or crawls past Camden are location specific. So in the West End, passengers will see relevant theatre and entertainment ads (not that you’d want to go out in the West End, of course)  with bespoke ads for music venues as well as specific information when you’re near Gatwick, Heathrow and London City airports.

Outdoor that’s location specific is always ace – but to find a way to make it location specific for more than one location is dead impressive. I’ll be hailing one of these at the next opportunity, and will try and grab you some snaps of the screens in action.
