It’s Friday, I’m Thirsty…

…and I quite fancy some bizarrely blended and quite-probably-revolting whisky. But which one? What I really need now is a novelty outdoor ad that looks quite cool, and presents a brand I’ve never heard of in a surprising way. Something that drives talkability, is shareable and – because of ASA rules – would only be allowed in the Colombian market.

Wait, what’s this?

“Something Special” – the famous Colombian brand of blended Scotch. I’ll have six. No ice required, compadre. It’s perfect!

Happy Friday!

In Emergency, Break Glass

Uncategorized

A pal wrote in this week with a tip on another *brilliant* piece of witty marketing from Paddy Power… who are gaining a name for themselves as one of the most mischievous brands in the country.

My heart, like yours, dear readers, is bleeding for Manchester United, as they swap twenty years of Premiership dominance for a mediocre, mid-table mess. (As an Ipswich fan, it’s a feeling I’ve been living with my whole life). What’s been endlessly amusing to watch is the way in which their supporters have taken time out from their busy stockbroker belt lives in the home counties to moan at every given opportunity about life in a post-Ferguson world.

But now, thanks to Paddy Power, fans of Salford’s biggest football club simply break the glass, give poor old David Moyes the boot, and reinstall Sir Alex back into the United dugout. Cheers, Paddy !

McDonald’s didn’t become one of the world’s most famous and popular brands just by selling delicious burgers. They did it – like anyone would – by spending serious money on brilliant creative ideas… and producing lots and lots of cheeky media.

The two examples below both show what happens when you mix some enthusiasm for irreverent marketing, with a budget larger than God’s own piggy bank. Pretty cool.

But the excellent Ad Pitch Blog alerted me to a really canny tactic that Maccas have been using in Spain. Fed up with neighbouring restaurants stealing their free wifi, Ronald and Co decided to turn the tables…and start stealing their customers. It’s the first time I’ve seen wifi codes used for marketing in this way before, and it’s really clever. Check out the video below to see how they did it!

PS Hat tip to the fantastic Daily Inspiration blog for the McDonald’s outdoor ads. Add them to your favourites now!

Advertising Advertising

Uncategorized

Those chaps at the Advertising Association have the most nebulous job description in history – spending their days, as they do, advertising advertising (and the things that depend on advertising) to people who care either too much or too little about, well, advertising. Weirdly though, they don’t actually use advertising all that much to do it (preferring to rely on PR, lobbying, and dollops of well seasoned, I-used-to-run-a-creative-agency-in-the-1980s charm to get what they want).

But with their forthcoming industry summit – Lead 2014 – just a few weeks away, your friendly industry association has splashed out on some ads run in the most eye-catching, effective and influential medium there is. Let me give you a clue – it isn’t TV:

I’m still trying to blag a ticket… because the lineup looks amazing. Hope to see you there!

It’s Time To Quit

Uncategorized

Welcome to 2014! If you are anything like the rest of the advertising industry, you’re starting the new year with a tender liver, an expanding waistline and – if you’re a committed smoker – a voice that sounds like Darth Vader on 40-a-day.

You’ve also probably resolved to live a little bit more healthily this year – which is why I was interested to see the Department of Health (and their media agency) blitzing billboards with some some especially lurid anti-smoking ads.

Whatever you think of the rights and wrongs of fags (I think they’re deliciously disgusting, obviously) January is the perfect time of year to be running the campaign.

Now, has anyone seen my nicotine gum?

Happy New Year,
