Walk to the Beat

Uncategorized

Beats by Dre – Dr Dre’s* headphone brand – have been one of the success stories of 2013. Sales have gone through the roof, celebrity endorsements have been piling in like an uncle at a free wedding bar, and their advertising has gone to the place where the young, cash-rich tastemakers can be found…. out of home.

And in the run up to Christmas, where better for your brand to dominate than Oxford Circus tube station? I took these snaps on escalator the other morning – and they blend digital screens, traditional panels and  loads of colour really nicely.

Happy Christmas from Dre – and from me too!

Out and about in Iceland

Uncategorized

I spent this weekend in the sunny climes of Reykjavik – capital city of Iceland, and a hipster playground for beautiful Northern Europeans with carefully constructed facial hair and avant-garde knitted trousers. It was heaven.

But it’s a long way from London, Toto, and outdoor ads just aren’t as prevalent as they are in the UK (understandable, perhaps, when you consider the small population and the four months of sparse, watery wintertime daylight that would send me into a semi-permanent hibernation).

However, there were a couple of typically witty pieces of OOH media which I managed to snap….and which both reflect the quirky, outdoorsy nature of Icelanders.

The first were these head rest covers on the Wow Air flight:

Cintamani’s enthusiasm for bigging itself up without any real proof points certainly went down well with me, and on a plane packed with hikers, bird watchers and nature enthusiasts, an ad for an outdoor equipment brand was spot on.

And this ad for magazine 66• North just summed up the whole island for me. Good looking, coolly executed and exotically hirsute. What more could you ask for?

Look….Down?

Uncategorized

I wrote about the excellent BA outdoor ad, “Look Up”, a week or two back.

It’s definitely one of the most eye-catching and creative uses of digital outdoor that I’ve ever seen…and the YouTube video has clocked up a million views (so it’s doing pretty nicely online, as well).

So a spoof of some sort was probably inevitable…and Domino’s pizza have come up with a nice riff on BA’s idea. As you can see in the video below, the Domino’s take on the ad features a lad, Simon, pointing down at a pizza delivery guy, with the hashtag #lookdown.

A press release from the company says the billboard bears a different message every time a delivery person passes by…

Have a great week,

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas…

Uncategorized

I took a turn around Regent’s Street earlier this week, where this year’s Christmas decorations have been up for (what feels like) about six months.

As well as the now ubiquitous sponsored lights (see below) the famous Grade 1 listed Eros statue at Piccadilly has had a festive makeover. The statue is regularly targeted by drunken vandals over the holidays (we’ve all been there, haven’t we?) so a snowdome (complete with fake snowflakes) has been erected over it.

Some digital screens have been built into the bottom of the snowdome, helping to pay for its new winter clothes, while also creating a new piece of outdoor media in one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in London. All very clever!
