Learning To Be A Better Commuter

Uncategorized

Commuting – with its pleasures (great outdoor ads) and pains (all of the other people and their odours) is something that’s woven into the fabric of British working life.

So I was interested to see that Transport for London have teamed up with London poets to to add a bit more excitement to your journey and also celebrate London’s thriving poetry community on National Poetry Day, Thursday 3rd October.

TFL will have Poets in Residence at nine major Tube stations, writing topical verses (in their own unique style) on the station whiteboards and performing in the busking spots. There will also being displaying a series of poems in billboards, like the ones below:

All of which adds up to a nicer way of reminding people how to behave themselves when they’re out and about on the capital’s transport networks.

More details on the scheme can be found here.

Have a great week,

Playing pranks with LG!

Uncategorized

I love a practical joke as much as the next guy who spends too much time stupefying himself with office work, and have long enjoyed the excellent outdoor stunts pulled by Korean electronics manufacturer, LG!

The company has form when it comes to playful outdoor advertising, and over at the really excellent Ad Pitch Blog, you can find a collection of their latest and great practical jokes.

My favourite of theirs is the rugby match/washing machine tie up below – a really simple idea, beautifully executed:

Their recent prank in a gent’s
wash room – showcasing the picture quality of their new TVs – is also worth a look:

Both of these just go to show that a combination of clever ideas and the outdoor medium can often make for an excellent viral video. Good stuff.

I spotted a couple of nice bits of outdoor in London this week, for brands that couldn’t be more different.

First up was a childhood staple of mine – the humble oven chip – getting the big billboard treatment in Shoreditch:

The perfect snack for those chilly, lonely autumn evenings? Yes. Delicious!

A little further down the road, I spotted a graffiti billboard being created by a local artist, advertising US rapper Drake’s new album:

For those readers unaware of what the album’s artwork looks like (and I’m guessing there might be one or two) here’s the original:

Uncanny, huh?

Cut Copy

Uncategorized

When Australian synth-pop* heroes Cut Copy launched their new single last week, they created a buzz online – by debuting the song on six billboards located around the world.

Fans were given a set of GPS coordinates, (below) and told that the new single would be waiting for them there. Once they arrived at the billboards, anyone with an iPhone or Android (with location services and audio turned on) could stream the track.

Suction by Samsung

Uncategorized

I found this excellent outdoor ad for Samsung’s new range of vacuum cleaners down the back of the internet this week. It’s a really simple, head-turning idea that’s beautifully done.

Suction is sexy.
