Paddy Perfect

Uncategorized

Paddy Power – the undisputed kings of talkable, shareable and tactical outdoor ads – have hit the headlines again today, after hanging an England fan (who won some dough by betting on Italy) in a cage.

Those of you who know their 18th century English history (and I trust, dear reader, that includes you) will know that these metal cells were known as gibbets, and were reserved for traitors, highwaymen and rogues. Others – and I’m showing my age here – will just remember them from the Kevin Costner mid 90s mullet ‘n’ arrows fest that was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, where they made a grisly appearance in Hollywood’s imagined Nottingham. To remind you how great that film was, here’s a picture of Kevin Costner and a sad looking horse:

Beautiful. Oh, and here’s the ad. I’m not sure which one produces a bigger emotional response.

This impressively quick turnaround from M2M, Talon, Clear Channel’s Create and Crispin Porter and Bogusky has upped the stakes for the next couple of World Cup group games. Herewith, any England fans betting on Costa Rica can be expected to shot into space, while punters taking a gamble on Uruguay should probably be burnt at the stake.

At the time of writing, none of the agencies listed above had offered me any money for these ideas – but there’s still time, lads (email address is below).

Have a good week,

PB

McDonald’s didn’t become one of the world’s most famous and popular brands just by selling delicious burgers. They did it – like anyone would – by spending serious money on brilliant creative ideas… and producing lots and lots of cheeky media.

The two examples below both show what happens when you mix some enthusiasm for irreverent marketing, with a budget larger than God’s own piggy bank. Pretty cool.

But the excellent Ad Pitch Blog alerted me to a really canny tactic that Maccas have been using in Spain. Fed up with neighbouring restaurants stealing their free wifi, Ronald and Co decided to turn the tables…and start stealing their customers. It’s the first time I’ve seen wifi codes used for marketing in this way before, and it’s really clever. Check out the video below to see how they did it!

It’s Time To Quit

Uncategorized

Welcome to 2014! If you are anything like the rest of the advertising industry, you’re starting the new year with a tender liver, an expanding waistline and – if you’re a committed smoker – a voice that sounds like Darth Vader on 40-a-day.

You’ve also probably resolved to live a little bit more healthily this year – which is why I was interested to see the Department of Health (and their media agency) blitzing billboards with some some especially lurid anti-smoking ads.

Whatever you think of the rights and wrongs of fags (I think they’re deliciously disgusting, obviously) January is the perfect time of year to be running the campaign.

Fancy a tab mate? No? All the more for me thenmm

Now, has anyone seen my nicotine gum?

Happy New Year,

It’s Got Our Name On It

Uncategorized

Want to know a secret? Despite my famously youthful appearance, I am getting to the age where, unhappily and definitely for the first time, I’m starting to pay attention to DIY adverts. So a clever new ad from Wickes caught my eye earlier this week, when the firm created an imitation building site on London’s busy Elephant and Castle roundabout, with a little help from their friends…*

The scene, which has been developing around the premium Primesight media location over the past two weeks, aims to grab the attention of a passing trade audience, while generating anticipation ahead of this week’s big reveal of stand-out 3D special-builds.

The special-builds, which feature a partially built roof, demonstrating insulation, and a giant radiator from Wickes’ deal range, are designed to remind skilled DIYers, and rank amateurs like me, that it’s time to pull our collective fingers out and get ready for winter.

Let’s take a look:

unnamed (1)

Now, I’m not an expert but the billboard above looks like a loft… and the one below looks like a radiator.

This is a radiator. Any idea how to bleed one? No? Me neither mate. you'd better get a guy in

Pretty hot stuff, for the cold depths of November…am I right?

Have a good one,

* The campaign activation was devised, planned and implemented by pioneering out-of-home (OOH) communications agency, Posterscope, with support from redefining media agency Carat, psLIVE, Hyperspace, media owner Primesight, and The Incredibly Smart Production Company. Well done chaps… trebles all round!

Soar Outdoor

Uncategorized

Our friends at Mashable have got the scoop  on an amazing set of digital billboard ads for British Airways.

The billboards will ‘interact’ with aircraft flying overhead. Developed by Ogilvy 12th Floor, they use custom built surveillance technology which tracks the aircraft and interrupts the digital display just as it passes over the site, revealing the image of a child pointing at the plane overhead accompanied by its flight number and destination it’s arriving from.

It’s all tied together by the #lookup proposition (geddit?) encouraging anyone who sees the ad to look up flights on the BA website. Check it out below – it’s really amazing:

The ads will also come ready programmed with some BA messages such as ‘Fly the new A380 to Los Angeles. ba.com/lookup’, or details such as the lowest fare available or the temperature at the destination. Simply stunning… and enough to get me searching wistfully for the next Christmas flight to Barbados…

Have a good week,

Xbox

Uncategorized

Microsoft’s Xbox is easily the coolest thing about the ailing US giant – and has an enviable reputation for superb advertising and PR.

So I wasn’t surprised to see a nice stunt from them in a warehouse near Liverpool Street the other week. It was part of the Xbox One tour promotion, which gives eager gamers the chance to play with Microsoft’s newest iteration of the smash hit console.

Check out the lighting – in Xbox green – which made the whole building look like an ad for the console. And up in the corner? A very pertinent billboard ad….

Ol’ Booze Eyes

Uncategorized

After last week’s ad for Irish True caught my eye, I received an email from a loyal reader who had spotted another whiskey advert that used black and white photography, deceased cultural icons and a bit of faded glamour to sell booze.

Jack Daniels produce some of the most consistent and instantly recognisable outdoor ads that are, well, out there, but for this variation on the classic whiskey they’ve produced a variation on their classic ads. The typeface looks different, the copy feels less “folksy” and they are using a celebrity endorsement (albeit, a dead one).

It’s a brave new world, even if the photo they’ve picked of Frank Sinatra seems to have been taken after a particularly satisfying piece of parallel parking…

Ireland Outdoor

Uncategorized

I went to Ireland for the first time this weekend, and had an absolute blast. In between eating lamb stew, necking pints of Guinness, enjoying the craic and avoiding lazy clichés, I even spotted a great example of some place-based/knowingly patriotic outdoor advertising in the airport.

Learning To Be A Better Commuter

Uncategorized

Commuting – with its pleasures (great outdoor ads) and pains (all of the other people and their odours) is something that’s woven into the fabric of British working life.

So I was interested to see that Transport for London have teamed up with London poets to to add a bit more excitement to your journey and also celebrate London’s thriving poetry community on National Poetry Day, Thursday 3rd October.

TFL will have Poets in Residence at nine major Tube stations, writing topical verses (in their own unique style) on the station whiteboards and performing in the busking spots. There will also being displaying a series of poems in billboards, like the ones below:

Blocking_holding-doors-JPG-528x754 Litter-JPG-528x789

PIOTs-JPG-528x764

All of which adds up to a nicer way of reminding people how to behave themselves when they’re out and about on the capital’s transport networks.

More details on the scheme can be found here.

Have a great week,

Playing pranks with LG!

Uncategorized

I love a practical joke as much as the next guy who spends too much time stupefying himself with office work, and have long enjoyed the excellent outdoor stunts pulled by Korean electronics manufacturer, LG!

The company has form when it comes to playful outdoor advertising, and over at the really excellent Ad Pitch Blog, you can find a collection of their latest and great practical jokes.

My favourite of theirs is the rugby match/washing machine tie up below – a really simple idea, beautifully executed:

Their recent prank in a gent’s
wash room – showcasing the picture quality of their new TVs – is also worth a look:

Both of these just go to show that a combination of clever ideas and the outdoor medium can often make for an excellent viral video. Good stuff.
