Grey: Great or Grate?


The UKIP poster controvery took another turn for the bizarre today – weeks after the party launched its controversial posters, faced a Twitter backlash and then became the subject of some creative vandalism (tut tut).

Today, conceptual artist Bill Drummond has written an article in the Guardian where he talks about creating “art” from UKIP billboards. To be crystal clear, and whether it is “art” or not, vandalising other people’s property (such as billboards) is illegal and never to be encouraged…and personal objections to a legal product or political party don’t justify destroying outdoor ads.

However, what Drummond’s article (and the pictures below) do underline is how emotive and powerful outdoor media (ahead of any other medium) can be. The public nature of outdoor means that the odd case of this sort is more likely than, say, the vandalisation of a person’s television in response to an annoying commercial. But it’s also the power that makes outdoor the medium of choice for so many brands, charities, governments or political parties.
