Queen of the High Street

Mary Portas – as you can almost hear the breathless TV voice-over explaining – is a woman on a mission: to transform and rejuvenate our town centres using the power of TV, some smart ideas and a killer orange haircut.

Today, Portas’s “Mary, Queen of the High Street” show visits sunny Margate, on the Kent coast – transforming “Kiss Me Quick” a reliably naff English sweet and titillation shop into a boutique seaside gift emporium.

So far, so much reality TV gold, baby – but tomorrow night’s show also features something even brighter than Mary’s fringe: namely Gratterpalm, the leading Leeds based retail agency.

For the show, Gratterpalm created a nostalgic look back into Margate in its heyday with edited 1970’s footage from South West Archive, playing across a triptych of digital screens, installed with hardware partner Mediazest.

Now, we all know digital screens do amazing things in a retail environment. But in case you need reminding, here’s Dave Hackney, head of digital signage at Gratterpalm:

“Digital signage can transform the shopping experience, creating ambience and driving shoppers to purchase. We are used to working with big high street retailers, so it was nice to have the opportunity to work with a small business that was really in need of a boost.”

Kiss me quick! (But if you touch my hair, I'll end you)

Couldn’t have put it better myself, Dave.

You can see the show on Channel 4, 9pm, on Tuesday 14th May.
